Reading and eating Advent, week 1
Welcome to our Advent of good things to read and eat throughout the season.
Welcome to our Something to Eat and Something to read Advent!
Last year, in our Christmas Special episode of the pod, we talked about the wonderful book Christmas Days, by Jeanette Winterson. In it, she writes about the joy she gets from small Christmas rituals, from re-reading certain passages from certain books, and cooking certain things every year on the same day. "We make our own traditions", she writes, "Ritual is a way of altering time. By which I mean a way of pausing the endless intrusion of busy life." Nigel Slater writes similarly in the Christmas Chronicles of the deep happiness he gets from quiet December mornings, reading by candlelight, planning what to cook, and nibbling on Christmas cake. In this spirit, we have decided to create our own ritual this year (and onwards!); an calendar of something to eat and something to read every day.
And with the season of Advent beginning today, four Sundays before Christmas, here goes… From now on, we will send you, our wonderful subscribers, an email every Sunday till Christmas with a week’s worth of things to read and cook.
We’ll also post these on our Instagram (but not the recipes). It’s our way of quietly celebrating the lead-up to Christmas (arguably the nicest part?!).
And please, if you have some suggestions of books or passages from books that you love to read/re-read at this time of year. Things you love to cook, share below so we can all go and have a look.
