Hello! Our episode this month takes its cues and themes from Asako Yuzuki’s blockbuster Butter. Translated by Polly Barton, it was based on a true story about a woman convicted of murdering her three lovers and has been described as a thriller and murder mystery.
Asako said in an interview with the Japan Times that she wanted to write about gender, misogyny and cultural differences in Japan, and she certainly does this in a very powerful way. But we think there are more threads we can pull from this book.
So, for this episode, we (or really Germaine!) decided to approach this story through a different, more psychoanalytic lens.
